...on a scale of 1 to 10?
People hardly ever tell you whats on their mind. Most of the time they’ll give you a surface level answer and not divulge into the specifics of what they think. Here is a way around this:
If you’re having a hard time getting down to the specifics with someone ask: How about on a scale of 1 to 10? When they give you a number, ask why isn’t it a higher number? This will give you what you need to work on. Then, ask why isn’t it a lower number? This will give you what is going right.
Coach Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions has a different way of coaching his team. It is very evident that he is one of them. There have been several different instances citing that his team plays for him in every way. So the question is: would the team you’re leading give YOU the game ball if they were successful? Do they feel that sense of support from you so much that their own accolades could go out the window and be redirected at you because of how appreciative they are of you? If not, why?

What motivational interviewing is is a collaborative conversation style for strengthening a person’s own motivation and commitment to change.
